"So this is the crime scene." Detective Donavon stated. Blood was splattered on the wall; the other part of the room however was neat and looked untouched. There was no sign of fight nor was there any sign of struggle to be found, to the right of the table, made with solid timber, so it looked. But if you looked closely, it was a fake. It was just made out of fiber wood, stood an empty safe on the floor in which was left open. It was cleaned out. Detective Donovan walked towards it for a closer look. He looked for a clue, any clue, a finger print, or a trace of thread from the suspect’s shirt, anything he could use to identify a suspect with. But not a single clue was left behind. Strangely enough, there was no sign of force applied on the safe.
"Suspect must have got smart and cleaned the room up before he left. Not a single clue was left behind" Detective Donovan said into the tape recorder, he had to take up notes and he thought this would be an easier way to check up on his clues later. Besides, he always thought well when he thought out loud. It had always worked for him till this day. Detective Donovan turned to look at the body. As he looked to the left, the body came to view. There it was, lying still in a pool of blood at the corner of the room. He walked over to the body then examined it for evidence. Nothing was found on the victim either. “Its’ gonna be a bloody long night I'm afraid." Donovan said breaking the 2 minutes of silence. It was a Sunday night. Around 12 something, and he wasn’t supposed to be on duty. His whole night of rest would come to an end.
"Where's the witness?" Donovan called over to the officer who was standing guard outside the room. "She's outside, talking to detective Sean. She's the one in the housemaid overalls over there." The officer pointed. There was a lady standing next to Detective Sean, she dressed like a housekeeper. She was in the housemaid uniform. She was rather pretty for some one working like that.
Donovan walked pass the body and went towards detective Sean and the lady, she looked pretty banged up for what its worth. She was crying. Tears were soaking her make up and it made her look really bad. He walked up to her and handed her a handkerchief. “There. Wipe your tears.” Donovan offered. He never liked seeing women cry. It just made him feel wrong in the inside, giving him goose bumps.
“Thanks.” The lady said, taking the handkerchief from Donovan. “I’d like to ask you some questions concerning our dead friend here. Hope you don’t mind.” Taking out his note pad now from the left pocket of his long black winter overall. “alright.” The lady answered between sobs. “Firstly, may I ask what your name is and what do you do here.” Donovan started. “I work here for the hotel as a housemaid. My name is Miss Flights, and I found Mr. Kingsley here lying like that.” She replied between sobs.
“Secondly, could you identify the person lying dead there, Mr. Kingsley was it?” Donovan asked. “He’s the manager of this hotel. Mr. Kingsley.” She answered still sobbing. “Could you describe him, his character? How he normally is, how his like and so on.” continued Donovan. “He was rather laid back, and was a rather messy person. He was kind to every one of us, putting us first. He wasn’t the kind of person who makes enemies the 1st time you see him. I don’t know anyone who’d want to hurt him, what more kill him.” The lady uttered. “What were you doing here?” Donovan added. “I was supposed to go out with him later tonight. Until….” She broke off to a cry again. Donovan thanked the lady and left the place.
As he was leaving, the boys from the CSI came to take over. He went to his black Toyota supra, and drove back to the HQ. He finished his job. Now all he had to do was wait for his subordinates to pass him what they found out and find out the killer. When he reached the HQ, he sat on his desk and started brain-storming, while waiting for his subordinates to hand him the documents and all the information they got from their investigation. He fell asleep shortly after.
He was snoring loudly when suddenly; there was a loud bang that went off right next to him. He jumped and shouted, take cover! Immediately, taking out his gun, he heard laughter all of a sudden. Then he noticed he’d been had by his subordinates. He put his gun back into the holster and asked them, “So, what do you have for me.” They each handed him a folder containing information on their suspects.
They then all surrounded the table. They each had a seat of their own; there were approximately 5 of them, Donovan, Steve, Frank, Danny and Ben. “So this is all the info we got so far.” Donovan said. “Fill us in with what you got Ben.” Ben looked at his folder and started, “I was investigating Mr. Richards, and he is the assistant manager in the hotel. I did a lil bit of snooping around and found out that he was supposed to be promoted to the manager and Mr. Kingsley, our victim was supposed to have an early retirement.”
“Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Retire at that age?? But he’s only around his mid 30’s.” interrupted Danny. “Danny, wait your turn. I’d like to finish this by tonight and since this case is rather, small, we should be able to do it. Since we’re the best there is. Ben, Go on.” Donovan said. “I know it’s rather early for Mr. Kingsley to retire but he was. So… accept it. Our victim was invited back as he was bringing good business to the hotel. Our suspect, Mr. Richards, needs the increase in his monthly wager badly, as it seems he owe the bank a large sum of money. And his mother seems to be in need of medication but he can’t find the money. His wager is barely enough to cover his mother’s medication.” Ben paused. “I see motive.” Donovan said quietly. “Carry on”. “He has an obsession with ink pens and he always carries a uniball pen around. He also has anger management problems, according to the other staffs. Lastly, he has never been good with details and always misses out on small things. That’s about it. I guess.” Ben finished.
“Ok Frank, what have you got for us from the boys at the lab….” Donovan turned towards Frank who was sitting on his right. He opened his file and started. “Alright, our boys from the lab found out that our dead brother here is a rather healthy person. No sickness whatsoever and he was strangled to death, followed by multiple stab wounds on the heart and lungs made by a blunt object, cause from a pen. They took the liberty to try out multiple pens and found out that there are only 5 particular pens that will leave marks like that. And yes you guessed it, our friend Mr. Richards carries them around wherever he goes. This is what our bros from the lab can cough up for us so far. By the way, I also found out from the hotel that no one was in the hotel that night, and only Mr. Kingsley, Miss Flights and Mr. Richards were there.” “Alright, what have you got for us Danny?” Donovan asked.
“But didn’t he just say that the most obvious suspect is Mr. Richards? We should have him in custody.” Danny asked back. “Danny, just tell us what you got for us. Mr. Richards can wait another day. Besides he won’t be leaving the town so soon anyway. Now hurry up, the faster you finish the faster we can solve this blasted case.” Donovan replied calmly. “Yeah, well I questioned Mr. Heaves, the 2nd assistant of the Hotel and according to how he described Mr. Kingsley; he has issues with Mr. Kingsley, BIG issues. His other staff told me that Mr. Heaves has a lil something going on with Miss Flights but Miss Flights ended it a couple of days back and started to go out with Mr. Kingsley.”
“Interesting, a little love triangle for our Boss ehh…” interrupted Steve. Danny gave him a nasty stare as if to say, shut up I’m talking here. “Right, carry on.” Donovan broke the two of them up. “As I was saying, He seems to hate Mr. Kingsley a lot. And he has a record in our database, for starting a brawl in the public. Although he is financially stable, he might have stolen the 600 dollars from the safe to make it look like robbery. I know there was 600 dollars in the safe coz unlike you guys; I found this paper among the neat pile of paper on his desk, the financial statistics. Ha-ha.” Danny ended laughing sarcastically.
“This is all I got from Miss Flights. She was rather dramatic over Mr. Kingsley, as she was sobbing a lot, which explains a lot since she was going out with Mr. Kingsley. She looked around her late 20’s. According to her, Mr. Kingsley is a laid back person who can’t put his books where its’ suppose to be. That’s all I have so far. And that should be enough.” “Let’s get started.” Donovan said. “We have 3 suspects here, and we have all the details we need. What do you make of it guys?”
“I think Mr. Richards did it. He has the strongest motive. Among our three suspects, and besides, he has anger management issues, and normally, multiple stab wounds are a sign of anger.” Steve said causing them to start re-thinking their theory. “But love has always been the spark for murder. And so I suggest its Mr. Heaves.” Danny added. “Well let’s get Mrs. Flights and Mr. Heaves rounded up and see what they have for us.” Donovan ended their little meeting. On the way to the car, Danny asked Donovan, “Why are we only bringing Miss Flights and Mr. Heaves into custody?” “You’ll find out soon enough Danny. There’s a lot more for you to learn to be a great detective some day.” Donovan answered him.
He and the others got into 2 separate cars then went back to the hotel again to round up the suspects. Without much hassle, they were all brought back to the police station for questioning. All three of the suspects were put into interview rooms which had one-way mirrors, like those found in movies.
In the small interview room sat; Miss Flights, her lawyer, Danny and Frank. There was a metal table in the middle of the room, a big mirror, 4 chairs, and a water fountain at the corner of the room. Miss Flight and her lawyer were seated facing the big Mirror. “Miss Flights, I know it was you who did it, wasn’t it...” Danny interrogated her, playing the bad cop, good cop routine. “Would you like some water first?” interrupted Frank. She looked at her lawyer and then looked at Frank, “Yes please. Some water would do me fine. Thanks.” She said. Frank got up to the water fountain and filled a cup of water for her. He then went back to his seat and passed the cup of water to her. “There.” He said kindly.
“Tell us what happened again.” Danny demanded. “You have your rights not to tell them if you want Miss Flights.” The lawyer interrupted Danny. “It’s alright Mr. Mathews. I’ll tell them everything I know. Kingsley and I were suppose to go out tonight, but he had some work to do, so he got held back, I left him at his office to clean some rooms, I told him to call me on my cell when he was done, but when it was 1 something, I started getting worried and I went to his office, and I found him dead. And I called the police using my cell.” She said. Then she started sobbing again. “Alright, thanks.” Frank replied. He then walked out the door and went into the room behind the one-way mirror.
Over in the other interview room, Steve and Ben were interrogating Mr. Heaves; it was a similar room to that of where Miss Flights was kept for interrogation. “So, tell us everything that happened just now, everything you know.” Mr. Heaves replied sternly, “I already told you guys just now, I am on night duty tonight. Just in case some guest comes walking right in. he needs service right? I’m there for him. And that was what I was doing. I was having a little snooze at the staff room, but all of a sudden, I heard your sirens out side the Hotel so I came out to see what was happening. That was when another one of your guys came and asked my questions. I already told him everything.”
There was a knock on the door and Steve went out to see what was wrong. Then less then a minute later, he came back in and sat on his seat. “Your partner confessed everything. She said she saw you strangling Mr. Kingsley and was asking him to back off. And when that happened he struggled and fought back, but in no vain. That’s when you took out a pen and stabbed him with it. If I’m not mistaken, the pen is with us at this very moment, even as we speak. So if you want a lighter sentence you’d better confess.” “That Good for nothing lady…” Mr. Heaves muttered.
“It’s not true. Of course she’d tell you that, she’s trying to make you think it was me who killed him. But the fact is she was the one that did it. I heard them quarreling in the office just now. She and Kingsley were starting to have problems in their relationship. Mr. Kingsley wanted her to stop flirting with all our guests but she said it wasn’t her fault. And things got rough. Really rough, that’s when she started strangling him and I heard cries from Mr. Kingsley. I left quickly, and pretended not to see anything. Cause I didn’t want to get into their mess.” Mr. Heaves confessed.
“That’s not true. You went in to help Miss Flights as u heard her cries, not Mr. Kingsley’s. The strangulation mark on his neck is way too big for a women’s arm. It had to be yours. And you couldn’t stand seeing your lover suffer. So in your rage, you pushed him against the wall and strangled him, that’s when u pulled out your uniball pen which was in your pocket and is now in our custody, and stabbed him with it. Isn’t that true? Then after having created a mess, you cleaned things up. But you cleaned a little too much up and you made Miss Flights phone the police with the office phone. But you forgot and cleaned that up as well. Well doesn’t matter now, your under arrest for the murder of Mr. Kingsley. Steve said, ending in an accusing voice. “Cuff him up boys” Ben said ordered an officer.
Back at Miss Flight’s interrogation room, Donovan entered the room with 2 other female officers and accused her saying “Miss Flights, you are under arrest for the murder of Mr. Kingsley. Your partner confessed everything. Cuff her up girls.”
It was around 5 in the morning when everything was over, Donovan sat in his desk and started on his report for this case when suddenly, Danny came into the room. “How did you know it was the two of them?” He asked. Donovan stopped typing and started off “Well Mr. Heaves seem to be the only one who would have been able to do that, with such a big body of his, his palms were a lot smaller then that of Mr. Richards and Mr. Richards was with another staff all night long at the Bar. So it couldn’t have been him. Miss Flights gave us quite a lot of false info which made me suspect her, firstly she was crying excessively, and she couldn’t have given us the wrong time, as she said she checked the time. But the biggest clue was when she said she phoned the police station using her cell phone. Our Phone record shows us that it was a landline that called us and not a cell phone.” He paused a little.
“She couldn’t have done it on her own as she was a lil too petite so I figured who might have helped her. Although Mr. Richards would have gladly helped, he was busy with his friend and is more likely not to be at the office. Mr. Heaves on the other hand would have liked to know how they were doing and was in the office which was right next to Mr. Kingsley’s office and could have heard what was happening. He would have liked to play hero and saved Miss Flights life but in the end, hero or not, he still killed Mr. Kingsley brutally and has to pay for his crime. He also took the 600 dollars to throw us into the wrong track but it didn’t work out so well as Mr. Richards was bad at small things, he wouldn’t have cleaned the place nicely. All in all, you must understand that crime never pays.” And at that, he continued on with writing his report.
